Should you do it: Of course!  Everyone should!  Realistically, creating new content on a regular basis can be a daunting task. The payoffs are definitely there, though.  Using different media to spread your message across the web can produce a number of results.  First, it can position you as an expert within your industry.  Next, it’s good for generating links back to your site which in turn is good for traffic as well as a being part of an effective Search Engine Optimization strategy. Finally, the content you generate will enhance your website and the search engines will index it and send you even more traffic.

The biggest downside is the time and resources to do it right.  Bastion Internet can help you, but we can’t do it all. You know your own industry best and when Mediacasting – that counts!

Blogging – write it and they will come: Blogs have become very popular. They range from being someone’s personal take on life to almost full blown industry news sites.  There’s a whole community (the blogosphere), and search engines like Google have subsections of search dedicated to ranking blog sites (http://blogsearch.google.com).

Blogs are basically a place to write your opinions about various subjects and have those opinions also broadcast out to all who subscribe to your blog (via something called RSS).

Blogging can be set up in different ways.  You can run your blog directly on your site, as a associated site, or as a service provided by a blogging site. Your goals and reasons for setting up your blog will dictate the best method for you.

Podcasting – if a podcast fell in the forest …: Podcasting is the audio equivalent of a blog.  With the success of iTunes and the iPod, podcasting has taken off.  There are many sites beyond iTunes that also link to and rank podcasts and ultimately drive traffic back to your site.  Audio is an extremely effective way to get a message across. However, it takes work to make it happen and to do so with a satisfactory level of quality.

Destination Sites: Although this isn’t really broadcasting (or even narrowcasting for that matter), putting media up on sites like YouTube.com and flickr.com can be useful depending on what market you’re trying to reach and your existing resources.  It can be a black hole, too.  Everyone’s heard of a great “viral” campaign that took off on YouTube.  However, very few of these campaigns were orchestrated.  They really were – viral.  So your results will definitely vary.

Resources – do you have what it takes: People often underestimate the effort it will take to regularly produce this type of content.
